Losing Our Languages

Posted on: Fri 8 Jul 2022

Australia has one of the fastest rates of language loss in the world with estimates suggesting that of the 250 Indigenous languages and 750 dialects, only 40 are spoken and only 12 are taught to children.

This year begins the United Nations International Decade of Indigenous Languages highlighting the need to conserve minority languages around the world.

Breakfast’s Tom Mann speaks with Dr. Lisa Lim, an Associate Professor in Linguistics from Curtin University, to tell us more about Indigenous languages in Australia and what needs to be done to preserve them.
