JobSeeker cuts to push 190,000 into poverty

Posted on: Fri 20 Nov 2020

From the 1st of January, the total JobSeeker payment will reduce from $815 dollars a fortnight to $715 a dollars fortnight.

This will push an additional 190,000 Australians below the poverty line—including 50,000 children—and have a devastating impact on low income families, according to research released by The Australia Institute this week.

Author of the report and Senior Economist at The Australia Institute Matt Grudnoff, speaks with Breakfast’s Tom Mann and Zoe Kounadis to unpack what these figures mean.
