Opera, But Make It Queer

Posted on: Mon 17 Aug 2020

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think about opera? Maybe a lady in a big dress and a horned helmet? Or a person in a powdered wig and tight tights? But opera is still being written today, and about the experiences of people like you and me. Laura Kaminsky’s As One is a 2014 opera about one of the most powerful, life-changing, affirming aspects of the queer experience: transition.

One of our new producers, Riana, who is non-binary themself, was lucky enough to interview Morgan Carter, who played “Hannah After” for Melbourne-based Gertrude Opera, about their experience of the production.
