Plans Scrapped for Nuclear Dump in Flinders Ranges

Posted on: Tue 17 Dec 2019

Following a community ballot to the locals of the Flinders Ranges, the Federal Government has cancelled plans to construct a nuclear waste dump near Hawker.

The waste dump, which is now expected to be relocated to Kimba, was voted against by 52% of the votes.

A ballot of Eyre Peninsula residents eventuated in 62% voting for construction of the dump in one of two sites near Kimba. This ballot did not include indigenous communities of the region.

Craig Wilkins from Conservation SA joins Breakfast‘s Tom Mann and Zoe Kounadis to discuss the ramifications of this decision – as well as the 13 billion dollar Murray-Darling Basin Plan.
