The naturalist, botanist and explorer Alfred Russel Wallace departs for South America in 1848 on a trip that would lead to one of the greatest contributions to science.

In 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident causes disaster in the Ukraine.

Blondie was at No. 1 on the U.K singles charts with their hit song Call Me.
