School costs adding to cycle of disadvantage

Posted on: Wed 13 Feb 2019

Nearly two-thirds of Australians say children’s education costs are unaffordable for many families, according to a new survey commissioned by The Smith Family.

The survey coincides with the beginning of the school year, which can be a really stressful time for families and children.

The Smith Family SA & NT, Graham Jaeschke, speaks to Small Change‘s Ross Womersley about long-term impacts of childhood poverty and being disadvantaged at school, and how we can help via The Smith Family’s Back To School Appeal.

Graham also reflects on the experiences of families who come to The Smith Family for help, the success stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students assisted through the Learning for Life program, and the new framework his organisation has set up in response to the Child Protection Systems Royal Commission.
