Breaking the silence of Indigenous youth suicide

Posted on: Wed 6 Feb 2019

Since the beginning of the year, it’s been confirmed that eight Aboriginal young people have taken their lives.

Gerry Georgatos has spent many years researching suicide prevention and working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities grieving the loss of their youth to suicide.

He joins Small Change‘s Lisa Burns to discuss why this is an issue that cannot be ignored and what needs to be done to help vulnerable young people.

If you’re in need of support, crisis services can be reached 24 hours a day, seven days a week, call Lifeline 13 11 14, Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800 or Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636.

For a list of culturally appropriate services in your area, visit the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation.
