In 1695, a window tax was imposed in England causing many shopkeepers to brick up their windows to avoid paying.

In 1998, Exchange rates between the euro and legacy currencies in the Eurozone were fixed so that on January 1, 1999, the European Union could introduce its new currency.

In 1999, Sarah Knauss died at the age of 119 years. She was the world’s oldest person, having been born September 24, 1880.

In 1907, the ball dropped at Times Square for the first time, signalling the New Year.
