The NAPLAN has become a staple in the Australian education system for keeping schools in check and ensuring students are progressing in basic literacy and numeracy skills.

But a new report from the Grattan Institute reveals just how diverse the rates of progress can be among students within a school, and challenges some common notions about our education system.
