Australia’s first ambulance service began on this day in 1892. Military medic Seymour Warrian observed how a rider at the Brisbane show received inadequate care for his broken leg after falling off his horse. The service started small having to transport patients on foot until it gathered enough donations to be able to afford better equipment.

Also on this day, the USSR launched Luna 2 which became the first spacecraft to hit the moon.

And the Monkees TV show premiered on this day in 1966.
