Architectural Fashion in Adelaide

Posted on: Wed 6 Sep 2017

Well it seems as if Adelaide has transitioned from a place that people said never changed, to a city that’s always evolving.

But fashion is always changing – how do new designs remain timeless?

Gerald Matthews from Matthews Architects says “buildings used to be designed to last centuries, but now they are designed to last 20 to 80 years because as a society we aren’t willing to invest in that kind of permanence anymore.”

According to Matthews, architects are constantly striving towards designing innovative buildings because “everyone likes vanilla, but it’s not going to set the world on fire”, he said.
