Meme Factories?

The use and abuse of memes in corporate marketing strategies has come to prominence in recent years – with more companies targeting youth markets by deploying ‘share-ready’ image macros over social media.

However the creation of these memes is not as low-key as you’d expect…

In fact, coordinated networks of meme creators and accounts exist in the bedrooms of Singapore and Malaysia – constituting so-called ‘meme factories’.

Crystal Abidin, Senior Research Fellow in Internet Studies at Curtin University, has spent the last two years investigating this phenomenon. She joined Breakfast’s Zoe Kounadis to elaborate.
