Women Hit Hardest by COVID

Posted on: Tue 23 Jun 2020

Towards the beginning of the pandemic, Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi highlighted the risks of the COVID-19 pandemic for women, and the gender imbalance in essential occupations.

In line with this, Monash University has found increasingly severe domestic violence rates against women since March, with women likely taking on most home schooling and additional care responsibilities. The high proportion of women in healthcare and education also exposes them to unsafe conditions.

Even in job losses, female Australians accounted for approximately 52% of losses in May and 55% in April.

This disproportionate impact has not been addressed with any support from governments – worsening pre-existing gender wage gap issues.
