On this day – 1 November

Posted on: Fri 1 Nov 2019

On this day in 1512, Michelangelo’s paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel were first exhibited to the public. The project changed the course of Western art and is regarded as one of the major artistic accomplishments of human civilization.

November 1 also celebrates Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadiens who was the first goalkeeper in the NHL (National Hockey League) to wear a mask. Plante’s introduction of the mask in the NHL raised criticisms from the hockey community of that time which questioned his lack of bravery. However, the use mask by goalkeepers soon became the standard.
