On This Day — 12 July

Posted on: Fri 12 Jul 2019

Breakfast celebrates the birthday of Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 for her activism in favour of women’s education.

At the age of eleven, Malala wrote a blog describing her life in Pakistan during the Taliban occupation in which women had been banned from attending school. After recovering from a shot by a Taliban gunman, Malala founded Malala Fund which is a non-profit organisation whose target is to provide education for every girl in the world.

Besides the Nobel Peace Prize, Malala’s work has been honoured by the United Nations, which declared July 12 as Malala Day.
