On this day in 1952, the ‘Great Smog Of London’ began to appear. The smog created a sulphuric haze over a 30-mile radius around the capital causing pneumonia and bronchitis in the elderly and children – over 4000 people are said to have died from the effect of the smog.

Also, on this day on in 1980, Led Zepplin called it quits, one month after the death of drummer John Bonham.
