Nicky Page: Helen Meyer – Service Voices ends

Posted on: Mon 1 Jan 2024

After a non-stop weekly broadcast through public holidays, the pandemic, and massive changes at Radio Adelaide for 7 years rain hail or shine, the hugely popular program Service Voices will come to an end.

Nicky Page delved into the background of this incredible program and its Executive Producer.

When Helen Meyer entered Radio Adelaide in 2012 she little thought it was her path to a broadcast qualification and then thousands of interviews within the defence community. Service Voices was the brainchild of Fiona White, Sharon Mascall Dare and Helen, who took on the role of Executive Producer.

Helen delivered the program for 7 years on Radio Adelaide as well as nationally via The CBAA’s Community Radio Network.

Nicky Page (pictured right) is one of her Radio Adelaide colleagues and in this extended interview quizes Helen about her own story. It doesn’t mention that Helen was awarded the inaugural Oral History Excellence Award of the History Council of South Australia  and that her latest major project From 6TTU to Vietnam – an Armoured Personnel Carrier for Australia was a finalist in the national Community Broadcasting Awards. It does mention that she continues in the role of oral historian for the Australian National Submarine Museum Project, a voluntary role.

Service Voices will end weekly broadcast on Radio Adelaide at the end of 2023 but all the stories are here. It will continue to be aired nationally on the CRN
