Even the voice of a disabled person deserves to have a place on radio

Posted on: Sun 30 Jul 2023

Dr Kim Stewart has worn many hats throughout her phenomenal 23-year career as a Social Worker, Academic Tutor/Lecturer, Radio Producer, Coordinator, Trainer, Mentor and Station Advocate for 4ZZZ 102.1 FM in Brisbane, Queensland, where she had a hand in helping and enabling those in management and the board to find ways to improve, support, include and give a voice for people with disabilities on community radio. She was also one of the co-presenters and co-producers of the disability and social justice issues based program, Only Human, which airs every Sunday afternoon.

Dr Stewart is also responsible for conceiving, developing, and then launching the Community Media Training Organisation (CMTO)’s Audio Ability Program Project in October 2022, which delivers a 16-week blended training and mentoring course for disabled people looking to work in the community media and creative industries sector.

Dr Stewart reveals more to De-Stigmatised‘s Jarad McLoughlin, including what drove her to get into community radio and how her own journey to get behind the microphone began.
