A different cycling hero

Posted on: Fri 20 Jan 2023

‘Medals aren’t meant to be worn on the shirt; they are to be worn on the soul.’

Gino Bartali (1914-2000) winner of the Tour de France in 1938 and 1948 risked his life in WWII to save Jewish lives in Northern Italy by secretly transporting documents in his bicycle.

His story forms part of Symphonie de la Bicyclette, written and performed by Hew Parham, playing at Adelaide Festival Centre’s Space Theatre until 21 January.
