Part 2: Len McLeod WWII Veteran

Posted on: Mon 7 Nov 2022

In the lead-up to Remembrance Day 2022 it’s fitting that we re-broadcast Len’s 2019 interview.

Part 1 broadcast on 31.10.2022 Part 2 broadcast on 07.11.2022

  • 14 days of Jungle Warfare training at Canungra Qld; Infantry New Guinea;   DC3 Dakota ‘Biscuit Bombers’ NG;  Back to the Infantry in 2/27th Bn NG;   US Army Small Ships; Philippines; Arrive Tokyo Bay with the USS Missouri; Post-war aid with UNRRA in China.  Len’s Mum thought he was in the Home Guard or the Cadets.  However… her darling son, just turned 16 years of age, was on a train to Queensland as part of the first intake to Jungle Warfare Training at Canungra in 1942 and then on a troop ship to Port Moresby New Guinea…. and so his big adventure in life began. After first marching into Canungra in 1942 where they lived in tents (no buildings had been erected, and water was sourced directly from the nearby stream) Len went back to Canungra in August 2022 as a very veryspecial guest. Len is the last Aussie to receive his 1939–1945 Star for WWII service.

Now aged 96, Len still lives in Queensland and is President of the US Army Small Ships Association.
