On this day in 1924, the celebration of Bloomsday began. Bloomsday is an international annual event which celebrates Irish author James Joyce and his book Ulysses.

In 1963, the soviet spacecraft Vostok 6 was launched into space. Valentina Tereshkova who piloted the spacecraft historically became the first ever woman in space. She orbited the earth 48 times over the course of 70 hours

In 1972, concept album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars by David Bowie was released. The concept album is a glam rock opera which tells the story of bisexual alien Ziggy Stardust arriving on earth to prevent an impending apocalypse.
