Stephanie Kelton on the Deficit Myth

Posted on: Mon 6 Jan 2020

Stephanie Kelton is a senior economic adviser to Bernie Sanders and has been named by POLITICO as one of the 50 people most influencing the policy debate in America. Alongside Stephanie is Steven Hail, a lecturer in the School of Economics at the University of Adelaide.

Stephanie is in Adelaide to talk about Modern Monetary Theory (or MMT) which is an approach to economic management through which politicians could finance big projects such as free higher education or the Green New Deal. To unpack MMT we began by discussing whether national governments should manage their budget in the same way that individuals manage their household budget.
