The discovery of antibiotics, last century, has led to the successful treatment of countless infections which had previously been life threatening.  But standard antibiotics are no longer as effective as they used to be. The emergence of multidrug-resistant organisms is posing a serious threat to world health.

The Director of SA Health’s Infection Control Service, Irene Wilkinson, explains what multidrug-resistant organisms are and what her department does to combat the spread of these dangerous infections.
