March 16, 2025 – Inverell, NSW
An incident at the Inverell Aquatic Centre in northern New South Wales has sparked allegations of racial discrimination, drawing both national and international attention.
Thomas Davis, a proud Kamilaroi man, spoke on Nanawun Kaldowinyeri: Taking Care of Creation to shed light on the event and the broader issue of racism in rural Australia.
On March 16, 2025, Thomas and his partner arrived at the pool to drop off money for their son. Upon arrival, they noticed a police presence and soon learned that officers had been called due to alleged misbehavior by a few individuals.
However, instead of addressing those directly involved, all Aboriginal families present—numbering over 20 people—were asked to leave the premises.
Reflecting on the incident, Thomas drew painful parallels to history, referencing the 1965 Freedom Ride led by Charles Perkins, which protested against racial segregation.
He expressed his deep disappointment that, even 60 years later, Aboriginal people continue to face similar discrimination. “Nothing has changed, really. If anything, we’ve gone backwards,” he remarked.
The incident was recorded on video footage, which quickly went viral on social media, drawing widespread support. Messages of solidarity poured in from across Australia and beyond, highlighting the persistent issue of racism in rural communities.
Thomas and his partner actively work with local Aboriginal youth, organising weekly touch football games and other activities to build a supportive environment.
He voiced deep concern about the effect of the incident on the children involved, many of whom were left feeling scared and confused. “It’s not right. These kids shouldn’t have to grow up expecting this kind of treatment,” he said.
Determined to seek accountability, Thomas is committed to using his platform to advocate for change. “I know I can’t change the world, but if I can change one person’s opinion and make things better for our people, then I’ll keep going,” he stated.
He sees his advocacy as a modern extension of the Freedom Rides and remains steadfast in his fight for justice, both for the younger generation and for Elders who have faced similar struggles.
The incident has reignited conversations and national attention now focused on the incident, in the meantime, Thomas continues to raise his voice, ensuring his community is heard and striving to create a future where such injustices no longer occur.
