He’s An Insomniac
Posted on: Thu 6 Mar 2025

Difficulty or inability to rest and relax your body when trying to get a good recommended amount of sleep (8-10 hours) can induce a lack of energy, endurance, motivation, concentration, strength, and coherency.
That is what young gay, Melbourne based filmmaker, podcaster, and stand-up comedian Sam McGowan is burdened with insufferably every night as he tosses and turns in his own bed. A self-confessed insomniac, Sam has tried everything to cure his indisposition – Ear plugs, white noise, crying himself to sleep, and even a free trial of an app called Calm, which he had to stop using as it costs $79 for an annual subscription. It is also affecting his newfound hobby of amateur tennis.
Sam will be doing his first ever solo show from next week at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, ironically titled Can’t Sleep. He shared with Utterly Queer As!‘s Jarad McLoughlin why it is he is unable to resolve his severe, chronic insomnia compulsions. Firstly, though, Jarad wanted to find out what Sam was doing with himself, whereby revealing that he likes to rehearse, practice, and perform his written material to his cats.
