Saving the rhino

Firstly there were foxes and rabbits, and then came the cane toads. Australia has certainly learnt its lesson with introduced species, but now a proposal is being suggested, that has a more thought out strategy and a nobler goal. That proposal aims to aid in the preservation of the world’s rhinoceros population by introducing some to Australia. Rhinos already exist here in zoos, but other areas such as cattle stations could have larger reserved areas for small to medium herds of rhinos.
One person who thinks that the idea deserves consideration is Bill Laurance, Distinguished Research Professor and Director of the Centre for Tropical Environmental and Sustainability Science at James Cook University. He spoke to Barometer’s Des Lawrence about the issue.
