Local and regional newspapers play a vital role in the community, as recordkeepers, a platform for local voices and a sometimes powerful investigative tool.
So how have they come under such pressure in recent years, what loss have we already seen, and what can be done to ensure local newspapers continue to survive and thrive.
Kristy Hess, Professor of Communication at Deakin University, speaks with Breakfast’s Tom Mann about the state of newspapers.
