WW2: Midshipman David Whiteman
Posted on: Mon 17 Oct 2022
DAVID WHITEMAN talks of his wartime service on HMAS Strahan, one of sixty Australian Minesweepers (commonly known as corvettes) built during World War II in Australian shipyards as part of the Commonwealth Government’s wartime shipbuilding programme. Following the cessation of hostilities, Strahan proceeded to Hong Kong where she was engaged in minesweeping and anti piracy patrols as a unit of the 21st Minesweeping Flotilla.
This interview was brought to our attention by David’s widow, Jan Grosvenor back in 2019. Jan’s friend Vicki Crowley had conducted a fantastic interview with the then 89 year old David, and both women gave Service Voices permission to broadcast the interview. So… sit back and enjoy Vicky Crowley’s interview with Jan Grosvenor’s late husband, David Whiteman.
