LIVING SUSTAINABLY ON FLOODPLAINS

Approximately 60% of the Murray-Darling Basin is constituted by floodplain ecosystems. Large, flat tracts of land adjacent to waterways which inundate and harbour vibrant biodiversity.
Their fertile soils delivered from upstream riverbanks render them a suitable site for agricultural development. However, when infrastructure causes river flows to decline, the ecological and anthropological value of the floodplain is compromised.
To speak about the interactions between humans and this highly productive ecosystem, Barometer’s Leon Bishop spoke with Martin Thoms, Professor of Physical Geography at the University of New England.
