Partially protected marine areas – the “red-herrings” of conservation

A University of NSW study of Australia’s Great Southern Reef, has concluded that not all protected areas are created equal. Partially protected marine reserves, that is, those which allow some forms of fishing, are no more effective ecologically than open marine areas,
The research comes at a time when the High Ambition Coalition of 50 countries around the world have pledged to protect more than 30 per cent of the planet’s lands and seas by the end of this decade. Barometer’s Des Lawrence spoke to John Turnbull, University of NSW science researcher, about the study.
