Cleaning up solar energy

Posted on: Tue 4 Jan 2022

Australia has the highest proportion of household photovoltaic (PV) systems in the world, with more than 21 per cent of homes – or around 2.59 million – now possessing a solar energy system. It is estimated that by 2035, more than a hundred thousand tonnes of solar panels will enter Australia’s national waste stream.

So, what are the potential solutions to this problem? To find out more Barometer’s Des Lawrence spoke to Professor Peter Majewski, of the Future Industries Institute at the University of South Australia. He is leading research into end-of-life strategies for the management of solar waste.
