‘Avoiding Deforestation’ – Is It Working?
Posted on: Thu 30 Sep 2021
One way of claiming carbon credits, and of Australia claiming emissions reduction, is through ‘avoiding deforestation’. The Emissions Reduction Fund will credit landholders who give up land-clearing approvals in perpetuity, and this will be recorded as an emissions saving. But what if that land was never going to be cleared? Is there a better way of protecting natural heritage? Barry Mitchell spoke to the Australian Conservation Foundation’s Annica Schoo, who has recently completed a study and report on this practice.
