The History of Anna Eleanor Roosevelt
Posted on: Tue 29 Jun 2021
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was an American political figure, diplomat and activist. She was the longest-serving first lady of the United States. She pushed the boundaries, making her quite a controversial woman in her time.
Against the backdrop of the Great Depression, the Democrats’ “New Deal” and the second world war, ER transformed the First Lady role from largely ceremonial to much more publicly and politically engaged one.
As well as opening the White House to new constituencies, she extended her duties far beyond the official residence, transforming the role of first lady.
Breakfast’s Tom Mann and Zoe Kounadis speak to Dr Zora Simic, Senior Lecturer, History and Gender Studies from The University of New South Wales about Eleanor Roosevelt and why she is a feminist icon.
