In 2016 the Brexit Referendum took place resulting a vote for Britain to leave the European Union by 52% to 48%.
The three year transition was overseen by then Prime Minister, Theresa May, with the official withdrawal in 2020 being undertaken by current PM Boris Johnson.
In 1912 father of computer science Alan Turing was born on this day.
Turing played a critical role in breaking the enigma machine: a machine used and developed by the German military to create and decode secret messages. He was also responsible for developing the theoretical Turing Model which was a core idea in early computer science
Turing was never fully recognised for his achievements during his lifetime due to being prosecuted for his sexuality. However he is now regarded as a highly influential figure in the field of theoretical computer science
Also in 1979, My Sharona by The Knack was released. The single featured on the bands debut album Get The Knack and was Billboards number one for six weeks.
