In 1937, the German automobile company Volkswagen was founded with the goal of making what they called ‘the people’s car’. It was a pet project for the Nazi government to create a small car that every family could afford.
In 1936, mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing submitted his paper “On Computable Numbers” that described a “universal machine” or “Turing machine” that could answer algorithmic problems in place of human mathematicians. The design became the theoretical basis for modern, digital computers.
In 1968, Australian pop sweetheart Kylie Minogue was born in Melbourne. Her first album self-titled Kylie was released in 1988 going on to be the best-selling album of the 1980s by a female artist.
