Pacific proposed for Fukushima waste release!!

Posted on: Tue 27 Apr 2021

Ten years ago on Friday, the 11th March 2011, an earthquake and tsunami devastated communities in north-eastern Japan.

However the catastrophe was greatly magnified by the release of radiation from three damaged nuclear reactors at Fukushima. Today, the radiation hazard continues to grow as the still needed coolant water accumulates. Most of it is dangerously radioactive

Now with little space for new tanks, the Japanese government has announced plans to release this radioactive water directly into the Pacific Ocean. To examine this issue, Barometer’s Des Lawrence spoke to Dave Sweeney, Nuclear Free Campaigner at the Australian Conservation Foundation.

The Japanese government’s decision to discharge Fukushima contaminated water ignores human rights and international maritime law
