In 1953, American virologist and medical researcher Jonas Salk announced the successful preliminary trials of a vaccine for Polio.

In 1973, women were allowed on the floor of the London Stock Exchange for the first time after campaigning for decades to break the 170-year-old history of men controlling the stock exchange.

In 1944, lead singer of the Supremes Diana Ross was born. Her career has spanned 70 hit singles, 5 films, a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys, an Academy Award nomination, and a Presidential Medal of Freedom.
