False perceptions of trauma in the media

The term ‘trauma’ is often used in popular and scholarly discussion to refer to psychological injury.

Sexual assault is a major risk factor for traumatic illness and it is often assumed pre-existing mental illness is often the cause of the allegation itself.

However, arguments around the truthfulness of assault claims can add to the stigmatisation about people living with a mental illness.

There are many myths surrounding trauma, memory and mental illness and Meera Atkinson, an Adjunct Lecturer in Writing at the University of Notre Dame speaks to Tom Mann to speak further and debunk the conversation about trauma and mental illness.
