On This Day – March 9

Today we celebrate the 62nd birthday of the world’s most famous fashion doll, Barbie.

Creator of Barbie, Ruth Handler noticed dolls were made to look like babies or infants, and there was a gap in the market when it comes to adult dolls.

After being inspired by a German doll called Bild Lilli, Ruth took her idea to Mattel, Inc. After some convincing, the first blonde and brunette Barbie were sold on this day at the American Toy Fair in New York.

In 1955, James Dean had his film debut in ‘East of Eden’, which he was nominated in an academy award for.

Dean lived until 24 years of age until he died in a car accident.

In 1977, The Notorious B.I.G was shot to death in a drive-by shooting.

The crime is thought to be related to a riff between rival rappers in the East and West Coast.

The incident occurred a few weeks before his album ‘Life after Death’ was released
