Don’t Save the Honeybees!

Posted on: Tue 2 Mar 2021

The global awareness of dwindling bee populations has been of increasing significance, particularly since the introduction of the parasitic Varroa destructor mite at the turn of the century.

However, populations of the European Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) hold a mono-culture within urban and industrial pollination in Australia. The effect thus being reduced genetic resilience, and a prospective loss of future pollinators.

Dr. Katja Hogendoorn, Senior Research at the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine in The University of Adelaide, and research assistant Elisabeth Williamson – cohost of Radio Adelaide’s ‘The Green Room‘ – join Barometer’s Leon Bishop to discuss the issue and their grant-funded research.
