Waste export ban becomes law

Early last December, Australia took an important step towards addressing the ongoing effects of the 2018 waste crisis. The crisis began when China imposed import restrictions, that excluded 99 per cent of the recyclables that Australia had previously sold to China.

The federal parliament has now passed legislation banning the export of unprocessed waste overseas via the Recycling and Waste Reduction Act 2020.

To examine how this problem unfolded and the future plans that Australia has for waste and recycling. Barometer’s Des Lawrence spoke to Jenni Downes, Research Fellow at the Monash Sustainable Development Institute, Monash University
