Spotify ‘Pay to Play’

Posted on: Wed 6 Jan 2021

Streaming services has become the main way in which we consume and enjoy music, taking over the physical music sales market, such as CD and vinyl. Signing up to a music service such as Spotify is simple, and playlists give listeners opportunity to have all your favourite music in one place.

Playlists can boost careers and earn major promotion, for example, if a song is included in Spotify’s ‘Top Hits’ editorial playlist, it could score a huge 20 million streams.

However, the streaming giant has proposed creators a boost in their algorithm in exchange for a royalties cut.

This can potentially detriment less established artists, with streaming services already making it difficult to make money.

Breakfast’s Zoe Kounadis and Tom Mann join Senior Lecturer in Politics and Economics at the University of Canberra, Dr. John Hawkins, to discuss the implications of this new feature.
