From his home in Bryon Bay NSW, the town where he was born, Arthur Malin chats with Daniel O’Brien OAM about early days in the ‘Bay’, and throwing in his fisherman’s job to join the Royal Australian Navy, where he spent 15 years serving on ships such as Her Majesty’s Australian Ships: Australia, Warrego, Sydney, Warreen, Jabiru, Barcoo, Quickmatch and Voyager, before returning to the life of a fisherman.
Arthur also talks fondly of small ships such as Wollongbar (II), “the pride of fleet”, which was torpedoed and sunk in 1943 by the same Japanese submarine that sank SS Fingal, Liberty Ship SS John Straub, and SS Pavlin Vinogradov, and damaged SS Ormiston and SS Caradale.
