On this day in 1920, Queensland and Northern Territory Air Services, or QANTAS, was founded in the small Western Queensland town of Winton. The airline was primarily a mail service until 1935. After World War II was over the Australian Government bought shares in the company and this was the beginning of QANTAS as one of the best international passenger services in the world.

Also, on this day in 1939, the famous Chicago crime boss Al Capone was released from Alcatraz, the notorious Island Prison in San Francisco Bay. Capone was the leader of the Italian-American organised crime syndicate in Chicago known as The Outfit and a major alcohol distributor during America’s Prohibition era.
