28 September is a significant date for science.
On this day in 1889, the International Bureau of Weights and Measures established the prototype metre as the distance between two lines on a standard bar of 90 per cent platinum and 10 per cent iridium.
Also, on this day in 1928, the Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin. Penicillin was the first antibiotic used by doctors and its development earned Fleming the Nobel Prize of Medicine in 1945.
