Peter Monteath: 42nd Street, Crete WW2
Posted on: Mon 23 Dec 2019
At what point does the will to survive on the battlefield give way to bloodlust? Professor of History at Flinders University, Adelaide, Peter Monteath has authored and edited many books. His newly published book, Battle on 42nd Street… War in Crete and the Anzacs’ bloody last stand draws on recollections and records of Australian, New Zealand, British and German soldiers and local Cretans to reveal the truth behind one of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War, a period not well known in Australia. Peter says in writing this book he also wanted to look at an experience that involved men from many different backgrounds but find themselves confronted with essentially the same set of circumstances. He wanted to know how those different people would react to that particular situation.
