In 1820, The American whaler Essex, was attacked by an 80-ton sperm whale 2,000 miles from the western coast of South America, inspiring Herman Melville’s Moby Dick.

In 1923, the U.S. Patent Office granted Patent No. 1,475,074 to 46-year-old inventor and newspaperman Garrett Morgan for his three-position traffic signal.
