Military Dogs: War Heroes or Just Tools?

The military dog who chased the Leader of Islamic State into a tunnel moments before his death is being hailed a hero, and rightly so.
However, the hero status given to military dogs is not reflected in their legal status during armed conflicts; so what exactly are their rights?
