Environmental laws need fixing

Last week Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley announced the ten-yearly review of Australia’s national environmental laws. The laws, formally known as the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, have been in place for 20 years.

The review could not come at a more critical time, as the environment struggles under unprecedented development pressures, climate change impacts and now a crippling drought. For an assessment of the review process Barometer’s Des Lawrence speaks to Jan McDonald, Professor of Environmental Law, at the University of Tasmania.
