On This Day;

in 1498, Michelangelo is commissioned to carve the Pietà, a famous work depicting the body of Jesus laying on the lap of his mother, Mary.

Commissioned by a French cardinal for his own funeral, the sculpture was carved from a single piece of marble and is the only work Michelangelo ever signed.

In 2004, “Gloria” singer Laura Branigan died at age 52 from an aneurysm.

Breakfast’s Tom Mann and Zoe Kounadis elaborate more on these events in history.
